Panini
The grammarian who wrote the first formal system
“He who knows the rules knows the language; he who knows the exceptions knows the world.”
Panini did not merely describe Sanskrit. He rebuilt it as a logical machine. Around the sixth or fifth century BCE, in the northwest of the subcontinent, he composed the Astadhyayi — eight chapters of 3,959 rules that generate virtually every correct form of the language.
The work is astonishingly compact. Panini used abbreviations, meta-rules, and a technique of substitution and transformation that anticipates modern formal grammar, even computer science. A rule can refer to other rules, modify them, and apply recursively. Linguists today still study Panini because his descriptive apparatus remains unmatched in economy.
What Panini proved is that a civilization's language can be treated as an engineering problem. He did not wait for grammar to evolve perfectly; he modeled it, compressed it, and handed the model to posterity. His students could then build on a shared foundation.
For the Society of Pranja, Panini is a method: take something vast and messy — language, law, organization — and reduce it to a generative system. Make the rules explicit, the exceptions documented, and the whole teachable. That is how knowledge becomes infrastructure.
