Aryabhata

The young mathematician who made the earth move

At the age of twenty-three, Aryabhata composed the Aryabhatiya, a slim work of 121 verses that revolutionized mathematics and astronomy. He gave a value of pi accurate to four decimal places, constructed a sine table, explained eclipses as shadows rather than demons, and proposed that the apparent rotation of the heavens was caused by the earth's own spin.

His methods were not merely speculative. Aryabhata provided algorithms — step-by-step procedures for computing planetary positions, solving equations, and extracting square and cube roots. He worked within the tradition of Indian mathematics, but he was unafraid to correct it when observation demanded.

The most striking fact is his age. Aryabhata was not a grey-haired sage at the end of a career; he was a young man publishing his first major work. His society had institutions that recognized and circulated youthful genius.

For Pranjam, Aryabhata is a mandate: identify the young, give them hard problems, credit them early, and publish their work widely. The next breakthrough may come from someone who has not yet been invited to the council.
