Bhaskara II, also known as Bhaskaracharya, was head of the astronomical observatory at Ujjain and one of the last great mathematicians of classical India. His Siddhanta Shiromani, written in 1150, is a comprehensive treatise on arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and astronomy.

His achievements are numerous. He gave solutions to Pell's equation, worked with infinitesimals that anticipate parts of calculus, computed the length of the year, and understood that the earth attracts objects toward it — a concept usually associated with a much later era. His astronomical calculations remained accurate for centuries.

Yet Bhaskara also wrote for students. His Lilavati, a mathematical treatise framed as a dialogue with his daughter, made advanced mathematics accessible and memorable. He understood that knowledge must be transmitted, not merely discovered.

For Pranjam, Bhaskara is the patron of rigor and teaching. We must do work that is technically excellent and also teachable. The highest mathematics is useless if it cannot be passed to the next generation in a form they can love.
